I often get asked about pet nutrition from my clients, friends, family, and random people on the internet! Everyone wants to know what is the best pet food, and with so many options it's easy to get confused
The answer is complex: it depends on the pet.
That is why I work with my clients one on one, to make individualized recommendations based on their needs.
But... adding small amounts of nutrient dense whole, real foods is something appropriate for almost every furry friend, and just might lengthen their lives. I call these foods "Longevity Foods" and I'm sharing a list below Longevity foods are can be added to a commercial food as a topper or fed as treats.
Please consult with your vet about home prepared diets or if your pet is on a prescription therapeutic diet.
My favorite Longevity Foods for Dogs and Cats
Eggs: Eggs contain ALL the essential amino acids, healthy fats, and vitamins/minerals. They contain antioxidants such as Lutein, which helps benefit the eyes.
Eggs are highly digestible, so they are great for pets with "sensitive tummies".
Leafy Greens: Contain high levels of Iron, Vitamin K, antioxidants. They can help support detoxification and are healthy for the Liver. Examples are Spinach, Kale, and Chard.
Berries: Berries pack in antioxidants for healthy brain function and phytonutrients to help with immunity. One recent study shows lengthened lifespans of dogs fed blueberries daily.
Mushrooms: Contain prebiotic fibers, longevity boosting compounds, Vitamin D, immunity support, and have detoxifying actions on the body.
Also:
Garlic: Not toxic in dogs! Antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory
Green Tea (decaf): Immune boosting, brain support, skin support
Spirulina: Immune support, Lowers Cholesterol
Turmeric: Anti-inflammatory, anticancer, support Liver/Kidney/Brain health
Microgreens/Sprouts: Packed with nutrients!
Kelp: Source of trace minerals, promotes oral health
Broccoli: Antioxidant, anticancer
Coconut oil: Antibacterial, Brain health, skin support
